Defines parameters and outlines test methods for measuring performance of pulse-echo medical diagnostic systems that employ single-element transducers and operate in the 0.5 MHz to 25 MHz acoustic frequency range. Provides a generally acceptable basis for measuring and reporting the principal performance parameters of complete diagnostic systems. The performance parameters specified, and the corresponding methods of measurement, have been chosen in order to provide a basis for comparison between similar apparatus of different makes intended for the same kind of diagnostic application. The set of results and values obtained from the use of the recommended methods will provide useful criteria for predicting the performance of equipment in appropriate diagnostic applications.
