Abstract

This Handbook sets out guidelines for designing and implementing best practice programs that are efficient, safe and environmentally sound for aggregating and storing e-waste generated by occupants of buildings and facilities.

Scope

This Handbook sets out guidelines for designing and implementing best practice programs that are efficient, safe and environmentally sound for aggregating and storing e-waste generated by occupants of buildings and facilities. It covers activities involved in transferring e-waste from individual occupants to a central location in the building or facility, to ensure e-waste is collected in aggregate for re-use, re-marketing, refurbishing or recycling.
The provisions of this Handbook also include specific guidelines for e-waste generated from the following:
- Small household appliances (see Clause A.2, Appendix A, AS/NZS 5377).
- Information technology and telecommunications equipment (see Clause A.3, Appendix A, AS/NZS 5377).
- Consumer equipment (see Clause A.5, Appendix A, AS/NZS 5377).
- Toys, leisure and sports equipment (see Clause A.7, Appendix A, AS/NZS 5377).
- Lighting equipment (see Clause A.9, Appendix A, AS/NZS 5377).
This Handbook focuses on the above e-waste categories as they provide the highest utility when re-used and are considered safe to handle by occupants; however, the guidelines may be used generally for all e-waste.
This Handbook does not apply to vehicle loading, transport, re-use, refurbishing or recycling activities.
